Getting Started with Van Life

Living in a tiny home on wheels – 72 sq feet of living space give or take – has been an evolution. Both of us had been downsizing our lives for some time, but getting together gave us the opportunity to take that to another level and combine it with our love for travel and hiking. Now, everything we own is in our van, with no room for extra clothes, extra food, or mementos from past lives. Carpe diem!

In July 2018, we bought a new Ford Transit cargo van, medium height and length, and began the process of building it out to our own needs and aesthetic sensibilities. Its been a steep learning curve for the both of us. Rusty had some carpentry and electrical skill from his days as a homeowner always working on his house. I could sew, paint, supervise, and provide moral support.

We imposed on friends and housesitting clients for the use of their driveways and tools sporadically to do things a little bit at a time. More than two years later, after lots more travel and hiking, we’re almost done. Under the Van Life menu above, we’ll share some of our van build-out in pics and video. And we’ll share some of our vanlife hacks and experiences as well.
